Moody Music Building, University of Alabama
Formed in Philadelphia in 1991 by mentor and coach Edgar Ortenberg of the Budapest String Quartet, the DaPonte musicians all are conservatory-trained. With an excellent reputation, they earned a three-year Rural Residency grant in Maine sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts and Chamber Music America. The Quartetís commitment to developing the love of music in children is expressed in the in-school programs they will present while in Tuscaloosa. For The String Quartet Society of Tuscaloosa concert, the DaPonte Quartet will perform Franz Schubertís String Quartet Op. 125, No.1, in E flat Major; David Del Trediciís First String Quartet No 1; and Alfred Pochonís Ballade. The DaPonte Quartet commissioned the Del Tredici composition from the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. The work will have its New York premiere at Carnegie Hall on April 15 preceding its Southeastern premiere in Tuscaloosa.
